St. Maart.: Illegal immigration

Where's the protest? Read it all. Interesting article.
Two grace periods were held for undocumented workers (and their employers) to register and become legal, and many made use of them. This was followed by an intensification of periodical immigration raids, but despite all these efforts, the problem is still there.

While the commissioner points out that many of these immigrants send a large part of their income home and do not contribute enough to St. Maarten, the employers who hire these workers to exploit them as cheap labour and to avoid paying taxes and social premiums are the chief culprits, along with property owners who rent them what are often deplorable living quarters for too much money, because they have no place else to go.
