USVI: ATF ASP

Gov. Charles Turnbull appointed a federal law enforcement agent Thursday to serve as the territory's assistant police commissioner.

Turnbull chose James McCall for assistant police commissioner - a position left vacant since the retirement of Bruce Hamlin on June 30 - according to a release faxed after business hours by the governor's Public Relations Office.

McCall, who works in the Washington, D.C., Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, will be "on loan" to the V.I. government, said police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Hannah. While working in the territory, Hannah said, McCall's salary will be paid by the federal government. Hannah did not know what McCall's salary will be.

McCall will live and work in the St. Thomas-St. John District. He will have an office in the Farrelly Justice Complex.

Hannah said the department is excited to add someone with McCall's experience.
