TT: Fed-up citizens march against crime

Under the watch of scores of Crime Suppression Unit detectives, thousands vented their frustration with crime and warned criminals they were taking back their homes and communities as they marched through the streets of Barrackpore yesterday.

Starting off from five districts in Barrackpore, the crowds mobilised themselves into a peaceful but determined protest against crime.

Dressed in black and carrying firearms, the officers made their presence known at Papourie Road, Rochard Road, New Colonial Road, GP Road and Rochard Douglas Road, where undercover cops mingled with the people.

But although threats of jihad (holy war) had been made, the march remained incident-free.

Marchers transcended religion, race, ethnicity, political affiliation, even geography, as they turned out in their numbers from around 2 pm.

They came from as far as Diego Martin, Penal, Princes Town, Debe and Siparia.

Politicians took a back seat as community leaders insisted that the march be a peaceful expression of the public’s disgust with rising crime.
It's high time that TTians rose up against the crime that's bedeviling the society. Now if the police would stand with the citizens, peaceful society can be restored so that TTians would feel free and safe the way life used to be.
