Cçao: What if the U.S. required this in the war against illegal aliens?

ARUBA Parliament has approved the introduction of a general requirement to carry ID.  After the amendment, everybody in Aruba is required to carry an ID (cedula).  The new law is one of Justice-minister Rudy Croes’ measures to combat illegality.  Still there are members of parliament that have their doubts.  The PPA for example, is afraid that the obligation to carry an ID would cause discrimination.  Connecting this law to that of Admission and Deportation is unacceptable for the PPA.

During the parliament meeting about the amendment, PPA-party leader Benny Nisbet indicated that his colleague Glenda Gil and himself have urged for the correct use of the law.  They emphatically requested Minister Rudy Croes to make sure that the law would not be used against certain groups in the community.  Nisbet is afraid that when the police do their surveillance in nightclubs for example, they might discriminate.  “It is possible to do selective surveillance on ‘new Aruban citizens’.  We are a multi-cultural nation and on top of that, there are many tourists staying on the island”, said Nisbet.  For the PPA, the obligation to carry an ID is a good thing.  It might make the community safer.  This is the reason why the party has approved the introduction.  "Time will tell whether the law will become a conflict with the principles of non-discrimination in the constitution”, said Nisbet, who indicated that they will actively implement and control the law.
