DR: The Al Gore effect -- who cares 'bout stinkin' rules?
Dominicanos all across the board are resisting electoral reform. Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado asked proponents of the Ley de Lemas (Preferential Presidential Vote Bill) to consider well the consequences of the changes it would bring to the electoral system. Business leaders and others object to the retroactivity of the law, and regard that feature as an attempt to change the rules in the middle of the game. "Jose Alfredo Rizek of the Foundation of Institutionalism and Justice (FINJUS) has called the bill a violation of the Constitution because of the precept of non-retroactivity of a law. He has explained that the bill would modify the conditions already established for the 2004 presidential election as per a resolution of the Central Electoral Board that declared the presidential campaign open on 20 January under the rules in effect." The Supreme Court of Dominica is studying the law.
Hey, look, if, in the presidential election of 2000, the Supreme Court of the Great State of Florida said it was okay for Al Gore and the Dems to change the rules in the middle of the game, why can't Dominicanos be happy with the same? C'mon, Dominicanos, you guys aren't better than the Floridians, now, are you?
