T&T: Cave man hangs self

Cyril Martin, 45, of Green Drive, Patna Village, Diego Martin, was found hanging from the rafters of the kitchen of the house which he had minutes earlier set alight.

According to his wife Jennifer, "I've been living in an abusive relationship for almost 20 years."

She said she and Martin decided that he would leave the house unlocked so she could collect her things after he had gone to work.

"He wanted the house and I had no objections to that."

She said that sometime later that morning she went over to the house to move out her belongings and he approached her, demanding she remove them in his presence..."but that wasn't the arrangement," she said.

She said she removed the keys from the door of the house, and that was when he went berserk. "He started smashing things in the house and I left because I thought it was dangerous," she said.

Martin began setting the house afire. He also found a piece of rope which he slung over the rafters in the kitchen following which he attempted to hang himself.

Cyril's nephew as well as some other neighbours saw the smoke coming from the roof of the house. Jennifer was informed and, together with some other neighbours as well as some other family members, they ran into the house in an attempt to save the man as well as items in the house.

Martin was removed from the house and taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he is said to have died on arrival.

She's well rid of him, I'd say. Even with a 20 year abusive relationship, the events leading up to Cyril Martin's death must have been extremely traumatic for his wife and children.
