Bdos: Further my God from thee

As Barbados moves on economically and people get more money and build houses they are moving away from the church.

That’s the assessment of Canon Noel Burke who yesterday made an appeal that whatever happens, we must not forget God.

Addressing the 20th anniversary thanksgiving service of to St. Patrick’s Primary School at St. Patrick’s Anglican Church, Christ Church, Canon Burke said: “The church is very important in our lives, whatever happens God never leaves us, he never forgets us and we must never forget him.”

The Anglican cleric noted that there were hardly any primary schools which were not established by the Church, observing the close connection between education and religion. He pointed out: “It says God is in the midst of everything and he must be at the beginning and at the end.”

Canon Burke noted too that there was a time when many schools got their names from Christian saints such as St. Silas, St. Alban’s and St. Patrick’s, but the trend was moving away to secular names, and he said one must be careful.

Maintaining that Christianity has had a major influence on education, the priest noted that the school’s day began with assembly at which prayers were said, and noted that it marked a positive influence on education in the island.
Two points: 1) how different Christianity is from Islam. 2) Barbados is following the course of many nations. With prosperity comes forgetfulness of the one who makes us prosperous. God willing, Bajans and other Caribbeans will remember God before He has to remind them that He is God.
