Blz: Strong economy good for democracy
“The future of our democracy lies in the strengthening of our economy; in a more favourable trading environment for our products; in more effective and rapid debt relief, in the promotion of new areas of economic activities like tourism, fish farming and the financial services; in putting in place proper disaster management structures to deal with hurricanes and other natural disasters and in protecting our environment for long lasting sustainable development
In government as well as in the private sector and civil society we must also concentrate our efforts on pursuing good governance and social justice …. Our task is to make democracy and the market economy work not only for economic growth and wealth creation but also for jobs creation and pro-poor development.”
This was the message that Prime Minister Said Musa took to the Republic of Chile as he addressed faculty members and students of University of Santiago in the capital of Chile. Mr. Musa was on a two-day visit to the Republic of Chile at the invitation of Chilean President Ricardo Lagos. In his meeting with President Lagos, the Prime Minister briefed the President on the Belize-Guatemala situation and on the role that the OAS should continue to play in addressing tensions along the borders caused by the illegal incursions of Guatemalans.
