POLICE chief Francis Forbes warned yesterday of emerging "strategic alliances" between drug cartels and some Caribbean politicians and said that the region has to act urgently, lest it finds its governments falling into the hands of narcotics bosses.This sounds familiar in the context of Haiti. "Intelligence analysts are now detecting a strategic alliance between organised drug cartels and some politicians in the region," Forbes said. "The strategy involves large financial support not to political parties but to individual candidates."
"Many persons in the intelligence community are of the view that if pursued successfully, this strategy could very well result in a prime minister of minister of national security whose decisions, when appropriate, are influenced by those who head the illicit narcotics trade - obviously an untenable situation which should be prevented at all costs."
