TT: For shame, Manning, to be petty with Caricom!

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Jun. 3 (UPI) -- Trinidad and Tobago will not send troops to Haiti to join a U.N. peacekeeping mission, reneging on its earlier promise, local news sources report.

The Caribbean newspaper Newsday reported Thursday Prime Minister Patrick Manning said "there is no shortage of troops going into Haiti" and the best way for Trinidad to help is through humanitarian and financial aid.

Trinidad had promised to send 100 soldiers to join the more than 8,000 U.N. troops, police and humanitarian workers scheduled to arrive in Haiti in the coming weeks.

The decision against sending troops to Haiti may have been a result of regional pressure to not support the U.N. mission.

The 15-nation Caribbean Community, of which Trinidad is a member, continues to harbor serious doubts about the events surrounding the departure of former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
