Bhms: Standing up like a man, 2

This is so gratifying. Now action is needed to back it up. My one point of disagreement is that there is no point in tossing money at Haiti as it stands. What is needed is boots on the ground in a joint Caricom-U.S. endeavor. Forget the supercilious and truly unilateral French. Haiti needs to be brought to order under long-term Caricom-U.S. or U.S. control first. Only then, when the political, economic, and physical infrastructure has been restored can Haiti be left to stand on its own two feet. Right now, throwing money at Haiti would be the equivalent of flushing toilet paper down the drain.
The armed gangs who seek to overthrow the constitutional order in Haiti should be urged to lay down their arms, and if not, they should be disarmed, Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell told a U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York Friday.

Mr Mitchell also said there is the need for economic assistance to alllow the efforts at restoring order and stability to succeed.
...
He said instability in Haiti means instability in The Bahamas, which is just 90 miles away. And, if the plan does not follow through, not only will The Bahamas, but also affected will the neighbouring islands of Cuba, Jamaica and Turks and Caicos.
