Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) coming on-stream
TobagoNews reports that Sir David (TN doesn't provide his last name), the Chief Justice of Barbados, is hoping that the CCJ (presumably Caribbean Court of Justice, TN doesn't say) will be up and running shortly.
Right now, "applications for the post of President of the court close on Friday and a nominee would go before the Caricom Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua on March 25." The fun part of this is that the Caricom Heads appear to have their hands tied with regard to who becomes president of the CCJ because, as Sir David said, "if the Heads did not accept the nominee they couldn't put someone else in the position." That's a good and tight khaki pants for them to be in. This way, nobody can manipulate the CCJ.
Apparently, this is much on Sir David's mind, for he promised that "every effort was made to ensure that procedures were in place to avoid political interference in the court. This included the financing of the court's operations that would be funded through a US$100 million loan from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) to a Trust."
It looks like Trinidad will be the primary seat of the CCJ, though. "Sir David said the court would sit in every member state and arrangements would be made for appeals to be filed in each country. However, he added, attorneys would have to have an agent in Port of Spain to handle their affairs."
