Ja: The media and the welfare of children

Why are the media in Jamaica objecting to Clause 44 of the Child Care and Protection Bill in light of this statement in Claude Robinson's article:
I believe most media houses have such policies, but I also know that there have been instances where the identity of children can be readily inferred from the information provided in the story.

Then there was the recent case of the Crawle killings when a nine-year-old witness was identified in a CVM-TV story because on balance, the editors felt the interview was vital to the truth-telling of the story. Although I understood the thinking of the editors, this was a case where I felt the protection of the child was more important.

Freedom of the press, yes. The protection of the young amongst us, most definitely. Read the article yourself; it's a good one.
