T&T: Crime will stop when the government does more than talk

Students at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, are now threatening to take the law into their own hands by arming themselves with guns, knives and cutlasses.

This was confirmed yesterday by president of the Students Guild Arnold Ram, who said the students believed it was the only way they could protect themselves from the criminals who had them under siege.

“The renegade students are preparing to take the law into their own hands, having resourced what they call protection for themselves,” Ram told the media.

The guild held an emergency news conference on campus to discuss the need for increased security in the wake of a series of robberies, attacks and rapes on students of the campus.

The latest incident occurred on Tuesday night, when three armed bandits robbed three students, then raped one of them at their Curepe apartment.

Ram said there were calls for tighter security at the university, but there was no response to date.
