T&T: No squatters rights

Anarchy! This was how Housing Minister Dr Keith Rowley described the squatter communities at Cashew Gardens and Wallerfield, yesterday.

Rowley told a news conference at the Housing Ministry’s South Quay, Port-of-Spain office that while Government sympathised with the plight of squatters it wouldn’t make any apologies for breaking down their illegal homes.

The Land Settlement Agency (LSA) and the National Housing Authority (NHA) recently demolished homes at both sites, insisting the illegal structures were interfering with Government’s housing programme.

The Opposition, however, has condemned the action.
