Bdos: Cancer study

A study to determine what drives the two deadliest cancers in Barbados – breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men – has been launched.

And Barbadians are being asked to help with the major research project known as Barbados National Cancer Study by participating.

It will last about four years, with a minimum of 400 people (100 per year) being screened.

Participation is by invitation, but those who have a strong family history (two or more members affected) of breast or prostate cancer are specially asked to participate.

The study involves a visit for interview and checks of blood pressure, sugar, height and weight.

Men will receive a blood test to check for prostate cancer and women who are eligible will be offered mammograms. All Barbadians are eligible. All tests are free and information is confidential.
