Bdos: Flawed genius

THE latest episode in the soap opera Diego Maradona calls life finds him in the ICU of a Swiss-Argentine hospital in Buenos Aires. Outside his fans clutch rosary beads, candles and prayer cards showing their saint. The more fanatical may be members of the Church of Maradona, a religion centred on the Argentinian striker that boasts flock as far-flung as Vietnam and Iceland. The church celebrates Christmas on Maradona’s birthday and refers to his autobiography as their bible. One of its Ten Commandments includes the order that sons be named Diego. For all his ups and downs, for better and for worse, no one in the football world has ever been worshipped like Maradona.
