Cçao: Abusing religion

CURAÇAO — The opposition parties in the Island Council are extremely annoyed about the manner in which commissioner Rignald Lak (General Affairs, FOL) has embraced religion to ward off criticisms on the appointment-policy of the Government Council. PAR-council member Oscar Castillo branded these actions as repugnante (objectionable).

During the intervention in the public council meeting earlier this week Lak repeatedly referred to Jesus’ suffering, as presented in the film The Passion of The Christ. He compared the suffering to what the FOL-commissioners have been going through this last period. “Jesus has done so much good. He gave the blind their vision back. Helped cripples walk again, but he was still punished and crucified by his own people. This community also has a lot of people who want to help. But they’re not given the chance. Only negative things are given a chance in the media. People are out to create hate and revenge. The country is built on this type of foundation.”

The fractions were incensed about the manner in which Lak handled the matter. LNPA’er Nelson Pierre described Lak’s performance as the gospel of Saint Lak, chapter zero. Castillo called it repugnante. “He compares himself to Jesus. He states that just like Jesus he wants to do good but is still punished for it. But Lak hasn’t done good, he’s done bad. He’s taking advantage of religion. I don’t appreciate that.”
