USVI: Carnival in St. Thomas

ST. THOMAS - Political satire and double-entendre reverberated at Lionel Roberts Stadium on Saturday night as calypsonians from across the Caribbean entertained a standing-room only crowd - including Gov. Charles Turnbull and several senators - at the 2004 Carnival Calypso Revue.

Timothy "Baron" Watkins Jr. lived up to his name as the "Sweet Soca Man," serenading listeners in a honey-coated voice with tunes about romance and passion, while his music put the horn section of the backing band Xpress Band through an exercise in harmony.

Edson "Ajamu" Mitchell, a six-time Calypso Monarch winner in his native Grenada, sang about world corruption with the lyrically adept "Playing for Time," then offered up a contagious hip-shaker with "Mr. Music," a song that showcased his talent on the drums, guitar and bass.

And David "Pung-Wa" Patrick, a former St. Kitts Calypso King, delivered strong lyrics about the rise of poor people.
