IN what appears to be a fit of savage rage, three teenaged girls reportedly beat and strangled the reigning Miss Mocha queen on Monday night during a brawl at a Mocha Street corner. A group of residents cheered the attackers on, and reportedly resisted the efforts of others to rescue the victim.

Dead is Kenisha Baird, 19, of Lot 547 Housing Scheme Arcadia, East Bank Demerara. She reportedly died after three other teens staged an attack on her while she was on the street.

According to relatives, Kenisha was on her way to a friend's house at about 9 o'clock Monday night when she was first confronted by two girls, who reportedly began beating her after a heated verbal exchange.

Soon afterwards, another girl joined the two, who were beating Kenisha. This third girl reportedly gripped Kenisha by her neck from behind.

One eyewitness said that during the attack on Kenisha, many villagers were present, and as the three teens began beating her, the villagers formed a circle around the combatants and encouraged the attackers with cheers.

And, when a few persons attempted to intervene, they were deterred by other residents who chanted, "Let them fight", the woman said.

Reports suggest that the motive for the killing stemmed from 'teen rivalry'. It was noted that Kenisha had had a few brushes with the teens prior to her death. They were apparently jealous of her achievements in winning several pageants.

The upholder is worse than the thief; all the residents in that vicinity ought to be arrested as accomplices to murder.
