T&T: Free trade area wanted

Trade Minister Kenneth Valley has proposed that regional territories should create a free trade area of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) in light of the stalled negotiations for the Free Trade Area of the Americas.

Valley, who recently became the chairman of the ACS Trade Council, made his proposal to the association’s member states representatives two weeks ago.

He made the disclosure at Tuesday’s post-Cabinet news conference held at Whitehall.

Valley said the FTAA ministerial meeting carded for July has been postponed to November, for the earliest, and the negotiations have stalled mainly because the United States and Brazil have been unable to resolve their dispute over agricultural subsidies.
