TT: Arrests needed re bomb threats
Government officials, business people and the protective services are caught in a bind by the increasing number of bomb threats received in recent months. It could be that somebody is playing the wolf game. Cry wolf often enough and nobody believes you anymore. Then, the wolf appears.
While recent calls have proved to be false, no one can take the risk of assuming they are just mischief calls. Lives may be at stake.
...
So far the searches which these threats make necessary have not found any actual bombs. But even if the calls are all mischief calls, the motives may vary. There have been times when bomb scares have coincided with negotiations over wages, for instance, when the threats may have been made by disgruntled employees who are not satisfied with the progress of such talks.
But in recent instances the motive seems to have been to cause instability and add to the nervousness which many people already feel because of the crime situation. In fact, there may be an orchestrated campaign going on, to judge from the recent targets, such as the conference of Caribbean chiefs of defence staff at which the Minister of National Security was speaking on Tuesday morning. That incident was clearly calculated to cause maximum embarrassment to the Government and the country on a regional scale.
...
While the number of bomb scares is rising, there have been no arrests as a result. One of the best ways to curb this dangerous practice would be to ensure that the perpetrators are caught and made to pay.
As it is, though, those who make bomb threats can assume they will not be brought to justice. It is not acceptable that a person or group can shut down the capital without fear of being caught.
...
The growing trend of bomb scares is a disturbing and costly new phenomenon which should be nipped in the bud.
There are even more alarming implications still. If the recent incidents are aimed at creating instability, police must move swiftly to find those responsible, since these bomb scares could be a mere dress rehearsal for even more dangerous acts.
