Cuba: Jailed for the beef

HAVANA, Cuba, April 12 (Moisés Leonardo Rodríguez, Grupo Decoro /www.cubanet.org) - About 20 people were arrested April 5 and 6 in raids directed against illegal butchers and distributors of beef cattle in the municipality of San Cristóbal in Pinar del Río province.

The operation was directed by a Department of State Security agent known as El Bon, said Felipe Gavilla, a local dissident, who said the crime was motivated by the scarcity of food.

"In some cases," said Gavilla, "it's profit, but behind this illegal behaviour is the serious scarcity of food."
