USVI: And you thought DMV was bad?!

The St. Croix Motor Vehicle Bureau's computer system is fully operational after being shut down for three days, Police Commissioner Elton Lewis announced Tuesday.

Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Hannah said residents now are able to register their vehicles and obtain vehicle titles and other documents.

He said repeated power surges at Patrick Sweeney Headquarters in Golden Grove, the site of the bureau, wiped out computer operating systems last week. Technicians were able to reinstall the operating systems late Monday afternoon, he said.

The machine that laminates driver's licenses, however, overheated Tuesday and was not operational, Hannah said. Residents were told to go ahead and pay for a new driver's license and keep their expired driver's license and receipt with them. Officials said the machine is expected to be working today.
