Cuba: Lending a hand?
KUALA LUMPUR: Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno travelled all the way here to lend a helping hand to the Palestinian cause, despite his country’s mounting problems with the United States. So, is this really about lending the "Palestinians" a hand, or is it really about finding an end run around the monetary restrictions imposed by the U.S.?
The former career diplomat left for home over the weekend, satisfied with the outcome of the Non-Aligned Movement’s (NAM) special ministerial session on the Middle East conflict, but still thinking of a way out for his homeland.

Moreno said he also briefed NAM members on Cuba’s plight caused by 43 years of economic sanctions imposed by the US aimed at toppling the government of Fidel Castro, who came to power in 1961 via a communist revolution.
On May 6, the US announced tougher measures against Cuba, which forms the NAM troika with Malaysia and South Africa.
The measures include stricter conditions for monetary flow into Cuba from Cubans residing in the US, and increasing funds to hasten the overthrow of the Castro regime.
