Hti: So-Anne's arrest welcomed by bishops

The vice-president of the Haitian Conference of Bishops has welcomed the news of the arrest of Lavalas activist Annette Auguste. Bishop Guire Poulard said that the arrest proves that the judicial authorities are doing their job impartially. He said that there are other Lavalas officials who should be brought to justice too, because, according to him, Auguste was just a link in the chain of the right-hand men working for former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

"I believe that the judicial authorities are doing their job. I hope that legal actions will also be taken against all the people who were involved in criminal acts."

Bishop Poulard said Auguste's arrest is just a link in the chain and that there are other Lavalas officials who should be arrested too. He points to former Lavalas Prime Minister Yvon Neptune.

"Auguste is just a link in the chain. But we know that there are a lot of other criminals. For example, the former prime minister is not innocent at all. Naturally, it pertains to the justice system to prove whether or not he was innocent, but it seems as if he is enjoying the protection of the Americans because he is an American citizen. It is as if the Americans came to Haiti just so they could protect these Lavalas men who were killing the people. Maybe this is the reason why he is still on the loose. It is important for Haiti to have an impartial judicial system. They should stop protecting these men so that order may prevail in the country."
