Cuba - Whew! At Least They Will Smell Better. The House Allows Toiletries to Be Sent to Cuba


By a vote of 221 to 184, the House decided late Wednesday, July 7, 2004, to block the Bush administration from enforcing new rules against sending personal shipments to Cuba.

State Department officials said the rules will be modified to permit the sending of toiletries to Cuba, although the frequency of the mailings and the range of recipients will be cut from the levels preceding June 30, when the new rules took effect. An official described a "continued effort to achieve the right balance."


Part of an extensive strict policy to restrict "aid and comfort to Castro's Cuba," the directives have been controversial, to say the least. Come November, will they affect Cuban-Americans' choice for President?
